Memo from Stomach to Brain

Dear Brain,

I want to take this opportunity to reach out and let you know what a profound impact you are having on our shared quality of life.

I feel like I’m being held personally responsible for what you put inside of me and, ultimately, I’m cleaning up your mess. It is unfair. I know what you are thinking….I do growl from time to time when I’m empty and hungry, but you really ought to use some discretion before sending things down here!

You may not realize, but you are routinely ingesting synthetic foods that I simply do not recognize and it is putting me under duress. I understand things are being presented to you as food and, undoubtedly, most people would consider them food. But I can assure you that not all things are what they appear to be! Just look at the list of ingredients of what you are throwing in our mouth and I’m sure you will see that many of these chemical foodstuffs are not biologically designed to be inside of me. Although I do understand and appreciate how some foods give you pleasure and you may gravitate to them, I beg of you to limit our intake of such products. I say this because I play a prominent role in regulating our immune system. If I’m not well taken care of, we can experience far-reaching and disastrous consequences in the long run. Keeping me in good shape and working order is key to our collaboration and overall health! My recommendation is for you to eat foods with ingredients that you can recognize and pronounce. Better yet, try eating foods that contain no label at all.

By the way, while you are trying to be more careful about what you eat, can you do something about the quantity as well? You often-times don’t hear me when I say that I am full. As a matter of fact, it’s not unusual for you to eat for another 15 minutes after I send a message! I’m getting bombarded by calories and surrounded by fat deposits as a result of over consumption. I would really appreciate you giving me a more reasonable daily work load. Eating smaller meals with greater frequency will get me in a better rhythm and aid in my digestion. And, if you don’t want to do it for me, do it for our heart. I know our heart will appreciate this immensely and, as we all know, our heart controls the clock to our lifespan.
