Last week marked the 4-year anniversary of the inception of my dietary transformation. It’s hard for me to believe that 4 whole years have passed and, while my new eating habits have since become second nature, I’m as surprised as anyone that I made such a drastic life change. Sometimes I wonder whether I truly remodeled my belief system, or if this was my existing ideology all along, waiting patiently for the right time and place to manifest. Either way, my commitment to the program is as strong as ever and I do not envision myself regressing. 2014 has been an extremely busy year thus far and I feel like I have been carrying around some extra weight. After hovering around 200 lbs for the past several months, I set a goal earlier this year to reach 190 by this Summer. Eating healthy can be complicated! There are so many different dietary guidelines and recommendations these days, some of which are contradictory to one another, that it’s easy to become overwhelmed and frustrated. I often wonder if we are missing the boat entirely when it comes to dieting for optimal health and longevity. In my opinion, too much time and energy is spent on various tangential imperatives, while ignoring the incredibly basic principle of eating real food.

From time to time, I am asked why I don’t eat pork tenderloin. After all, from a nutritional standpoint, it is comparable to a skinless chicken breast. So if it’s a relatively low-calorie lean source of protein, why do I choose to avoid it?
I recently came across this fascinating TEDx talk on YouTube after a friend turned me on to Dr. Lissa Rankin, author of the book Mind Over Medicine. My dietary transformation has been a very personal journey for me and has not been adopted entirely by my immediate family. For example, just because I genuinely believe that humans are not designed to consume another animal’s milk (especially throughout the course of their lifetime), I have NOT imposed a household ban on dairy products. It occurred to me this holiday season that diet and religion have striking similarities.
Following are the Top 10 reasons for my perspective:
1. All diets, like religion, have guidelines to follow. Be it Atkins, Mediterranean, Nutrisystem or The Zone, all diets have a specific set of rules to abide by.
