Back to the basics

Eating healthy can be complicated! There are so many different dietary guidelines and recommendations these days, some of which are contradictory to one another, that it’s easy to become overwhelmed and frustrated. I often wonder if we are missing the boat entirely when it comes to dieting for optimal health and longevity. In my opinion, too much time and energy is spent on various tangential imperatives, while ignoring the incredibly basic principle of eating real food.

Following are a few noteworthy examples of how I feel we may be disconnecting ourselves from what we are eating, in favor of controlling and manipulating nutrition to meet certain health-based criterion. Continue reading

My dietary transformation has been a very personal journey for me and has not been adopted entirely by my immediate family. For example, just because I genuinely believe that humans are not designed to consume another animal’s milk (especially throughout the course of their lifetime), I have NOT imposed a household ban on dairy products. Meanwhile, I would argue that some of my dietary habits have rubbed off on my family. Continue reading

Gluten-free diet transformed my digestion

I have been on the sidelines for years….watching, hearing, and reading various reports about the benefits of eating a gluten-free diet. I finally decided to try it and have been doing it consistently for the past month. Judging by how much of the food at markets and restaurants these days is labeled “GF”, it’s obvious that I am late to the gluten-free party. The primary reason I hesitated to try it was simple. I viewed gluten-free as yet another version of a low-carb diet in disguise. Well I’m here to report that I was wrong….potentially very wrong.

Prevention or Intervention?

I often wonder if chronic illnesses, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, are man-made.  I know this is a bold thought, but it’s really hard for me to believe that we were created with the intention to suffer from disease.  Unfortunately, there is no way we will ever know the answer to this notion, as it is beyond the scope of recorded medical history.  At minimum, I believe there is enough current scientific evidence to suggest that the prevalence and increasing rate of chronic illness is attributable to mankind….that is, lifestyle and environmental conditions. What comes around goes around

I believe that there is a connection between doing the right thing and living a healthy life. As it pertains to eating, I believe that an association exists between making responsible food choices and being physically fit, preventing disease and living longer. I truly believe we have the power to manifest these things through the food choices we make. Continue reading

Mind the odds

This year’s football season is now in full swing.  If you are like me, you are celebrating this time of year by participating in NFL survivor pools, fantasy football leagues, etc.  These weekly wagering moments can be awfully challenging, because they pose multiple difficult decisions.  Invariably, the safest thing to do each week is to use the established odds to your advantage.  In the survivor pool, I typically pick the team that is favored to win by the greatest margin, based on the Las Vegas point spread.  In the fantasy league, I routinely start the players who are projected to score the most points, based on the analysis and opinions of the professionals.  Once in a while I will deviate from this strategy, but this is a rare occurrence and it is the exception to the rule.  More often than not, I choose to go with expert opinions.

Now consider this very same scenario as it pertains to eating.  I believe that there is a strategy to eating and I believe that there is such a thing as eating with the odds, so to speak. Continue reading

The Blame Game

If you live in the United States, there is no doubt that you have seen the seemingly never-ending rotation of 1-800-BAD-DRUG commercials on television. These advertisements claim that you may be entitled to financial compensation if you experienced a serious adverse event as a result of taking a pharmaceutical product.
