Dear Brain,

I want to take this opportunity to reach out and let you know what a profound impact you are having on our shared quality of life.

I feel like I’m being held personally responsible for what you put inside of me and, ultimately, I’m cleaning up your mess. It is unfair. I know what you are thinking….I do growl from time to time when I’m empty and hungry, but you really ought to use some discretion before sending things down here! Continue reading

Spring Cleaning: Throw away unwanted pounds

2014 has been an extremely busy year thus far and I feel like I have been carrying around some extra weight. After hovering around 200 lbs for the past several months, I set a goal earlier this year to reach 190 by this Summer. Despite consistently making quality food choices, limiting my portion sizes and exercising regularly, my weight does not seem to be responding as I have come to expect. Continue reading

The reason I stopped PORKING OUT

From time to time, I am asked why I don’t eat pork tenderloin. After all, from a nutritional standpoint, it is comparable to a skinless chicken breast. So if it’s a relatively low-calorie lean source of protein, why do I choose to avoid it?

As it pertains to eating, I believe that an association exists between making responsible food choices and being physically fit, preventing disease and living longer. I truly believe we have the power to manifest these things through the food choices we make. Continue reading

Managed Care

There is so much talk about managed care these days and how every American citizen needs to have a health plan. It is a rather complex and controversial topic. But amidst all of this talk, are we really focused on true “health plans”? What is the definition of a health plan anyway? Is it a product of an insurance company that is ultimately responsible for your well-being? At the end of the day, aren’t you the one managing your care? Shouldn’t your true health plan be a set of guidelines that you follow to keep yourself healthy? Managed care, as we know it, would be a far less controversial topic if all Americans had an established health plan that guided their actions and behavior.

The New York City soda ban was not without merit

First of all, let’s get something straight.  The New York City ban on the sale of sodas larger than 16 ounces, at face value, was absolutely ridiculous.  The act of banning people from purchasing a giant sugary beverage is just plain foolish….laughable in fact. But when you examine things from a different angle, I believe this was a brilliant move by Mayor Bloomberg.  Allow me to explain why….
